Despite the disappointment of a general recall, General Motors is set for a massive year EV-wise come 2022. One of the most anticipated EVs is the Chevy Silverado EV, an electric pickup truck, which the Detroit-based automaker has been teasing.
As the name indicates, the Silverado EV is the electrified version of GM’s popular ICE truck. However, it is built from the ground up as an electric truck. A full reveal is coming in January during the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. However, we have compiled what to expect from the battery-powered truck if you can’t wait.
The Silverado EV will be powered by GM’s Ultium battery. It is the same battery that EVs across its many brands will use, including the resurrected GMC Hummer EV SUV and truck. The new battery packs can reach 200 kWh, which the Silverado EV is expected to get. This will be enough for up to 400 miles per charge, 50 miles more than the Hummer EV.
GM claims the Ultium battery has a better range than the competitors and is betting big on it, with $35 billion being invested in the technology and production before 2025.
While the Hummer EV will produce up to 1,000 hp, the Silverado EV will offer about half of it, although GM could make a high-performance version down the line.
The Silverado EV will have all-wheel drive as standard. Since it uses the Silverado brand name, it will most likely look like the ICE, and you might not be able to tell the two apart. This is exactly what Ford is doing with its F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck.
Similarly, the interior should be similar to what the ICE version offers. The center touchscreen-enabled console should be about 13 inches diagonally.
However, GM has teased a glass roof on the Silverado EV, a first for any of its trucks.
Speaking of price, the base version of the Silverado EV should start between $40,000 and $50,000, although the top trim could go for as high as $70,000. GM will also sell a fleet version.
GM will start producing the Silverado in early 2023 in the same factory that will make the Hummer EV.
