- owie.p@downlow_performance_inc I have nothing against EV’s, I would own the fuck out of a Cybertruck. It’s just heavy towing severely effects range, more than it would on an ICE truck, if you don’t carry close to payload rating it doesn’t matter though.1d1 likeReply
- downlow_performance_inc@owie.p I drive a 2016 F 150 and haul a 20 ft enclosed trailer. without trailer I get about 600 km per tank. with trailer I am lucky to get 250 maybe 300. I dont see your point. get on your bike and ride as far as you can. then hook a trailer up and see if you can ride as far. physics is a motherfucker.1dReply
- owie.p@downlow_performance_inc Assuming a weight of 6500lbs (1000lbs over the model X), the
possibility of a drag coefficient as low as 0.3 mentioned by Elon on
Twitter, a 200kWh battery pack, an a standard enclosed 14,000lb trailer at 60sqft. Travelling 160km at 120kmh on a 1% grade would require 170.5kWh net energy or an 85.25% efficient motor, (model X is 97% efficient). An F-150 at it’s max tow capacity of 13,000lbs with a worse aerodynamic coefficient, and a 136L tank at ~1200kWh of fuel would do the same task needing 170kWh of energy, requiring the motor to be 14% efficiency. Assuming an average of 33% efficiency for this motor you would travel 372.71km on 1% grade, and assuming it’s in perfect operating conditions (not hot or cold out) the Tesla at 97% efficiency would be able to travel 182km. - daniel__bonilla_@joshlemon50 Well, you have tried it, but 30 minutes in an electric car 5 minutes in a gasoline car, because the difference is still considerable. But hey, it’s a matter of taste.2d1 likeReply
- joshlemon50@daniel__bonilla_ No the timeframe is definitely a challenge. For me it worked out. I would take like 10-15hr trips. So when I stopped the charge, I stopped for food or just to walk around. So the 30 minute wait wasn’t bad. I mean when you’re driving around town/the city, the tesla is better because you can just charge at home. I see both sides to this though.2dReply
- daniel__bonilla_@joshlemon50 Well, seeing it this way is not so bad, the same in the future all or most cars will be electric and there they will implement more charging points which will make everything more normal, so to wait for that to happen to definitely switch to electric cars.2dReply

- harry_george.arthur@turbocb7 they are VERY clean compared to car engines, hence why we dont power the national grid using V8s1dReply
- turbocb7@harry_george.arthur correct, they are cleaner then they have been, but saying that charging cars with coal or gas is clean energy is disingenuous at best1dReply
- owie.p@turbocb7 Cleaner. The amount of carbon emissions in the mining, refinement, transportation and burning of gasoline/diesel far outweighs the emissions produced to charge an EV in an area where coal is used. Energy’s 95% renewable where I live though so it’s pretty well negligible.1dReply
- turbocb7@owie.p still not clean energy, no matter how you try to spin it. As well as the production of the batteries and motors and components of an ev car ate far worse than a simple ice car. But dont take my word for it, I only work on them for a living1dReply
- owie.p@turbocb7 I work on cars for a living too.1dReply
- turbocb7@owie.p then you should know what I said is correct1dReply
- owie.p@turbocb7 the only place ICE motors have left to go is variable compression and compression ignited gas motors. After that we can’t increase efficiency and decrease emissions any further. The production of batteries, recycling process, electric motor tech, and efficiency will only improve in EV’s will only increase and the use of renewable energy sources for charging these cars will only become more abundant. ICE cars obviously give you an enjoyment you can’t get out of an electric motor, but the sound of a turbo motor hitting 8k isn’t gonna go away in our lifetimes. Arguing against EV’s is arguing against progress and does nothing good.1dReply
- turbocb7@owie.p I am not arguing against ev’s. Nowhere have I said that. You typed a whole lotta stuff for no reason. I’m stating the simple truth, unless you are charging directly from nuclear, solar, wind, or hydro you are charging using non clean sources. That is the fact. Ev’s are the future. You ever drive a model s p100d? Mind blowing and they destroy ice powered cars hands down1dReply
- sunrisein2020I’m fine with waiting. It’s the environment that counts. Sure the gas car may only take 4 minutes but what you save in time you destroy in environment. Electric cars are clearly the future and getting a second hand electric car will make more of a difference.2d4 likesReply

- stephan_millard@sunrisein2020 currently an electric car actually has a higher carbon footprint(with very few exceptions) than a traditional car because of manufacturing the battery is so much more intensive on the environment than the production of a normal car. - thefittestdoc@bryangrims Believe me when I tell you, you’re overthinking it. Do you sit there in the middle of the day at a charging dock waiting for your phone to charge? No. You unplug it in the morning and it’s fully charged. I have a Tesla Model 3 Performance and that’s how it is…every morning. Fully charged with 310 miles. - armin.els@enism6 @tehjimos its not just the coal power. The whole process of constructing new Tesla factories, cars and related assets, the acquiring and disposing of lithium battery cells and materials needed for the abovementioned, the generation of electricity and the disposal of old, used cars people get rid of for a brand new Tesla have a 3x higher footprint per Tesla than just using your current 2009 Corolla (any other car). And are you smoking? Coal energy is 4.3x more pollutant than the average car.2d2 likesReply
- tehjimos@armin.els … it’s not like your destroying the used car. Someone else uses it. You can’t understand life cycles apparently… doesn’t matter if a Tesla produces more to make… in the life cycle it has a lower carbon footprint. The toyota also had to make factories, dispose of materials with a lot less cleaner energy grid. Tesla uses renewable energy for it’s factories. Instead of being cocky, try a schoolbook or simple logical thinking.2dReply

- tehjimos@armin.els saying “are you smoking?” is being cocky. Go read on what a lifetimecycle is and then apply that to your calculations :)2dReply
- enism6@armin.els I think a lot of people get stuck in a mentality that if the solution to a problem is not 100% perfect then we shouldn’t move fwd at all. Current gas engines didn’t get to where they are overnight, it’s taken over 100 yrs of development to get them to be the relatively efficient and reliable engines that they are today. What you seem to be saying is that because Tesla’s cars aren’t 100% clean we should just keep things the way they are. Tesla is a step in the right direction and it’s actually a huge step in the right direction. It’s also not Tesla’s fault that our government is subsidizing the dying coal industry to artificially keep it alive (so republicans can win votes in coal country) instead of pushing fwd with an aggressive switch to clean energy. And yes producing products does and always will create some pollutants and have an impact on the planet. But as @tehjimos was pointing out the lifecycle of an EV is far longer than that of a gas car meaning less cars will have to be built.16h1 likeReply

- justin_hermouf_official@game_wiz1 that’s not always true.. it’s depends where the source comes from.. where I’m from they are the best for the envionment because the electricity comes from windmills and not industrially made22hReply
- game_wiz1@justin_hermouf_official I’m talking about the electric power I’m talking about the batteries. If electric cars become the norm the plastic island in the pacific will be tiny to the lithium ion battery stock pile that we aren’t able to get rid of. One battery when produced makes as big as a carbon foot print as a V8 5 years life cycle. Also those batteries only last 4-6 years and after that they are blocks of acid we made that is like plastic and doesn’t have places to go.22hReply
- justin_hermouf_official@game_wiz1 there’s a new technology called glass batteries which will be able to handle the mileage, be more eco friendly, and put out more tq and hp.. idk much about this topic but I think electric cars are scary because of the full range of torque at any rpm and cuz they can easily have loads of torque.. it will be interesting how people will “modify” them and how they will make them go faster or if it will just be more money more power22hReply
- game_wiz1@justin_hermouf_official the problem with glass batteries are their duration and power output22hReply
- justin_hermouf_official@game_wiz1 they are still getting developed so then that won’t be the problem21hReply
- game_wiz1@justin_hermouf_official sadly we can’t get rid of the lithium ion processing and how it works. Even if we did go smaller with more energy it would still make a bigger foot print personally global warming is a joke to me but almost all Tesla owners buy them for the environmentally friendly side so just pointing out how they dare greatly flawed21h1 likeReply

- kote930No oil field in the world produced more than 20% of its reserves because our technology can’t get reservoirs pressurized beyond this point to keep crude flow. Once we reach production plateau reservoirs go into managed production decline and then just conserved. Once tech improves we come back and behold- reservoir “recovered” or in sinple terms- more oil appeared in it. Oil and Gas are infinitely renewable sources.18hReply
- terrychenowithTesla recharging is NOT free. To travel 1,000 miles it costs roughly 2,500 cubic feet of natural gas, or 286 lbs of coal which is what most of the world uses for electricity. So that’s roughly 822 lbs of carbon dioxide of coal burnt to refuel that electric car per 1,000 miles. A comparable car say the BMW 4 door 3 series (not this 2 door sports car that you are trying to use) with a gas engine would be about 507 pounds of Co2 created per 1,000 miles. Let’s factor in the 75 minutes it takes to recharge. The average Tesla owner annual income is $143,177 US dollars per year. That means sitting there for 75 minutes just cost that person $103.60 of income. As apposed to the gas driver costing .21 cents for 5 minutes. Let’s call it 10 mins. .42 cents. That’s a net loss to the Tesla of $103.18 factor in the cost of even $80 to refuel that BMW Tesla is still costing you $23.18 per recharge to tank of fuel. Nope Tesla is NOT FREE!16hReply

- sweet_n_sour_nut_v2@winnipeg_car_life fossil fuel powered electricity plants are certainly not clean but theyre actually better than fossil fuel vehicles because the average car engine has a furl burning efficiency of around 30% while most power plants are closer to 60+%. - crazyfruitbat@sweet_n_sour_nut_v2 that depends. In Japan after the Fukushima disaster they moved to mostly coal driven electricity. As Japan doesn’t have coal they import it from across the globe, so there is a massive carbon footprint before it even hits the oven1d1 likeReply
