Are you looking to buy an electric car that would take you on long trips? Then you have to select one with an extended range. Fortunately, electric vehicles have moved from lacking in driving ranges to become long-lasting on the road, thanks to improvements in battery and efficiency.
This article has put together a list of long-range EVs that you can buy and be free of range anxiety.
The Kia Niro
This electric crossover from Kia is the first on our list and will last 239 miles. This doesn’t even mean you will pay an arm because it costs $39,000 before you account for the federal EV tax credit. However, if the base model does not excite you, the $45,000 trim has more fancy features.
For these prices, you get a family car with enough storage space in the trunk.
Hyundai Kona Electric
Hyundai decided to make an electric version of its Kona ICE but based it on the same platform used by the Kia Niro. The electric Kona is a $37,390 car that goes 258 miles on a charge. It saw a design refresh in 2020 that included a new front end.
The Volkswagen ID.4
It is reasonable to expect a Volkswagen car to make this list. Despite its less than spotless history with tailpipe emissions, the German automaker has gone all-in on electric cars. It based this EV on its MEB electric platform that it will use across all its brands.
The ID.4 has enough juice for 250 miles before you have to plug it in to charge. Volkswagen knew it had a winner in its hand when the car sold out in a matter of hours.
Ford Mustang Mach-E
With the first American car on our list, we have entered the 300-mile range territory. The Mustang is a familiar brand as Ford has used it to sell many ICEs cars. But now, the carmaker is borrowing the brand for an electric car.
The Mustang Mach-E looks like its ICE cousins, but more importantly, it can go 305 miles with the top trim called the California Route 1. It starts at $50,400, but that is too steep for you, there is a 230 mile trim that costs less.
This entry is quite different from the other vehicles on this list because it is a pickup truck. However, since it is an electric vehicle that lasts 314 miles per charge, we include it. This truck with a distinctive headlight is produced by Rivian, who recently started to make customer deliveries.
Rivian wants you to take this truck on adventures and will even install chargers in places nature lovers like to go. Be ready to part with more than $67,500 to own one.
Tesla Model Y Long Range
At last, the first Tesla! But you knew it was coming as Tesla is known for its battery prowess and engineering talents in general. This EV lasts 326 miles before you need to charge it with a Supercharger rapidly. It costs more than $50,000.
Tesla Model 3 Long Range
Another Tesla, but this time, the best-selling EV ever. This is a well-made car that also costs more than $50,000. You can squeeze out 353 miles from the battery. If you are on a tighter budget, you can go for the base Model 3 that lasts 263 miles.
You will soon see more of this car on the road as Hertz has ordered 100,000 units from Tesla.
Tesla Model X Long Range
Never mind that Tesla has dominated this end of the list, but the Model X Long Range goes 360 miles before the battery dies and you need to charge. This electric crossover sells around the $100,000 mark, with high performance to show for the price apart from the battery.
Tesla Model S Long Range
Here is another Tesla, but this one crosses the 400-mark with a 405-mile range. Drive to your heart content in this Tesla’s flagship car. Another variant of this car holds the record for the fastest electric vehicle in production.
Lucid Air Dream Edition
It was not long that the Air Dream Edition toppled the Model S Long Range from its perch as the king of EVs battery-wise. This luxury car goes for over $160,000, and Lucid is about to start delivering to those who made pre-orders. This will be a quick job as the company is making only 520 units (yes, the same number as the official range in miles).
